It’s the season of LOVE…

 LOVE is in the air….

Yes, I know, I know – Valentine’s Day is so over. The roses are wilting, chocolates are gone and the candle light dinner was well…ok.

But, hey! Is just ONE day enough to celebrate your love? Is just ONE day enough to express how you really feel for the special someone in your life? Is just ONE day enough to show your darling sweetheart what she means to you?

Nope, I don’t think so.

So, I am declaring the rest of February as THE SEASON of LOVE. And during this season, please continue to shower your love on those you love. To keep the love alive, here is some romantic food for thought…
CHOCOLATES – Also called the food of gods. And it helps the brain to produce serotonin – making you feel good. My favorite…

Chocolate Ivory This is sinfully delicious. Layers of soft chocolate cake with mousse swathed in a rich, delicious dark chocolate sauce that melts in your mouth. Mmmm… Fantastic when shared with your loved one!

ALMONDS – It can make the girls go nuts over you! Can’t get almonds? Settle for this…

Dome Au Choc Amanda is mouth watering… moist chocolate cake bathed in dark, rich chocolate covered with bits of almond dragees. With a lovely surprise inside!

So, are you in mood for love? Check it out at Marquise

LOVE is in the air….

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day!!

All those who are in love will be excited. And it’s a trying time for those are trying to show their love to one another. I was told to write something heart – warming (that’ll make you say,” Awww”) but I decided to do something else instead. Below are my favorite love quotes…

If you love people, you have no time to judge them – Mother Theresa

Well, it’s just like Mother Terry says it. If you love someone, spend your time loving the person. Just show the person that you care. Cherish the person and let him know that he is important to you. And if you’ve decided to love him, go ahead. Once you start doing that, you’ll be too busy loving him instead of wasting your time judging him.

Love is not looking at the each other; it’s looking in the same direction – Antoine Saint Exupery

Oh well, it’s nice to look at each other, isn’t it? But do you realize that when you do that, you’re both looking in the opposite (and opposing) directions?? So… learn to look in the same direction. Be focused on similar things – especially in values and issues that are important to both of you.

Love isn’t blind, it only sees what matters – William Curry

Well, love is not blind. It makes a choice of seeing what really matters. So you need to decide what really matters to you. The choice is YOURS. And may I add that true love doesn’t turn a blind eye to short comings or flaws, it makes a conscious decision to be more aware of what really matters.

If you really love someone, say it – Tina Hars

Well, just say it. And why not say it in another language – it still means…

• Ethiopian – Afgreki’

• Gaelic – Ta gra agam ort

• Hopi – Nu’mi unangwa’ta

• Yoruba – Mo ni fe

Happy Valentine’s Day, all!!

GONG XI FA CAI !!

The year of the DRAGON is just around the corner! You can tell Chinese New Year is coming when it gets hot, dry and windy. And the flowering trees start to bloom.

FLOWERING TREES...

The Chinese New Year (CNY) season is fun. Living in a new village (off Jalan Ulu Klang) is a good place to see the Chinese culture alive and thriving.

There are lots of activities – There is the massive house cleaning, pooling in to make cookies, the shopping, putting up of décor – and oh yes – the ladies get a new hairdo

My village has its own lion dance troupe and the boys have already started practicing, even late into the night.

On CNY day, it’s busy, busy – visiting friends, collecting red packets and of course – tasting all the goodies! My all time favourite indulgence is the totally yummylicious jerky.

Lots of other friends will drop by and we will chat – until someone turns on the TV, that is. Then all conversation will come to an abrupt end.

              S I L E N C E

I have always wondered – why watch TV when you have guests? I mean, these are people you like, right? You did invite them, right? Isn’t it only proper to spend the time with them? (unless you’re trying to get them to L E A V E…! )

So, this CNY, TURN OFF THE TV !!

Enjoy the love letters, pineapple tarts, shrimp rolls and the ngaku chips.

Most of all – enjoy the time with your guests.

Happy New Year, all!

It’s Christmas! May you have the joy of family, the hope of happiness and the love of Christmas! Joy of family –The Christmas season is a season to be thankful for your family and for any you regard as a family member. It’s always a joy to be with your family during this time.

The hope for happiness – Well, is there anyone who doesn’t want to be happy? I don’t think so. We all want to be happy. And if we are not (or not yet) we can always hope that one day, happiness will come. And when there’s still hope – all is well.

                      H A P P I N E S S

The love of Christmas – Oh yes, we all need a little lovin’, don’t we? And especially during this season, you can sense lots of love floating around. I mean, you must, what with all the gifts and presents and hugs and kisses? But, wait a minute…that’s the love at Christmas. The kind of love that’s so evident during Christmas .

But – I wish you the love of Christmas. That wonderful feeling of loving those around you and being loved. Knowing that you are loved and cherished by some – even when you don’t get presents. (and having the capacity to love them back – even when they didn’t give you presents!) Most of all, that you will have loved ones who are confident in your love for them – even when you don’t give them presents! And may you feel this love ALL YEAR ROUND!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Light up your day …with Deepavali

If you like a story with a happy ending, then you’ll love the Deepavali story. It is a tale about triumph of good over evil. And the best part is… a Hindu GODDESS killed an evil King!! (Talk about girl power!!!)

Deepavali is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. (It’s an official holiday in Myanmar!) And like all Hindu celebrations, it’s a colorful occasion.

Before Deepavali or the Deep (as I call it) the house must be cleaned thoroughly. It’s the perfect time to give your house a fresh coat of paint. One year my Dad let me do sponge printing on my room door and a designer door was born!

You need to shop for new clothes (and matching accessories) and decor.

Good places to shop would be Lebuh Ampang, Brickfields and of course, Klang. The Temple of Fine Arts also has bazaars where you can pick up unique items.

Then comes the food. Murukku, acchu murukku, chippi, nei orundei, laddu and other traditional crunchies are made earlier. (Not too early, or it’ll disappear by the Deep)

On Deepavali eve, prayers and offerings are made to ancestors and deceased family members. It is always a vegetarian meal. The eldest female of the family will serve a handful of this meal to the rest of the members. That’s a banana leaf meal – served in a chickenrice ball style!

On Deepavali morning, kids put on spanking new clothes and fall at their elders’ feet to ask for blessings. (They usually get some duit raya then) The older ones usually troop off to the kitchen to prepare for visitors. Here everyone pools in to make briyani, mutton perattal, fried chicken, prawn sambal, fish cutlets, dalcha, mixed vege and achar. (That was my menu for the Deep last year!)

And then, we get into our new clothes and welcome our guests as they come trickling in for a Happy Deepavali!!

Make a Difference Day 22/10

Just discovered that there actually is a Make a Difference Day! Serious! It’s celebrated in the US every 4th Saturday in October. It was created by the USA WEEKEND magazine.

I’m not sure if we celebrate this day locally but I think it’s about time we did. Why? Because this marks a day when we can make a difference in our community. Especially to the less fortunate like the hungry, homeless or ill. Nope, cash donations don’t count.

It’s a day that we set aside to give our time and use our skills to make a difference in the lives of those who otherwise don’t really matter to us. Most of us read about them, see them on the streets, feel sad and…. It’s also a good day to be thankful for what we have.

Well, if you really want to make a difference you can start by helping out in the Soup Kitchen for the Homeless by DUMC which has a street ministry around PJ and Jalan Sultan. The Tamil Methodist Church also hands out food to the poor every Saturday morning. PERTIWI Soup Kitchen (Fridays) caters for the hungry around the Chow Kit area. You can also check out Kechara Soup Kitchen.

Ok… you’re not people oriented. So, why not help out in SPCA instead? Or take a trip to Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary and give them a scrub down? Make a difference to the animals instead!

If you prefer not to support any groups, it’s fine. Just get a group of friends, head over to an orphanage or old folks home. Offer to paint their gate, help around the garden, chat with the oldies or just play games with the kids.

The happy faces and the grateful smiles  will tell you that you have indeed made a difference.
